Ann Arbor power outage, July 26 2007

Power went out at the Pineapple this afternoon, quite suddenly. I walked out to find a few people on the street asking whether it was just them, and then went back to the office to discover that it was out at Kerrytown too.

A walk towards town found a clump of trucks out – a fire engine, a city truck and a DTE truck – and the stretch of Detroit St. north of Zingerman’s blocked off because of a power line down. What I saw from a distance was a line sagging 10 feet below normal, didn’t get close enough to figure out if there was a cause.

Continuing towards the scent of power (and wifi), everything north of Huron St was down, some lights were not working on Huron St, and then south of Huron St things were back to normal. I ended up at Sweetwaters downtown (ginger-lemon tea, iced, $3) which is right near our new offices.

The last power outages were June 27, 2007 and July 5, 2007. The DTE outage map at 3:16pm shows 100-1000 customers without power in 48104.

UPDATE: Ann Arbor News blog report says

A power transformer in the 500 block of Detroit Street in Ann Arbor shorted this afternoon, cutting off power to businesses and homes north of Huron Street, said Mike Bergren, the city assistant field operations manager. (Mike is at 734-994-4918)
